New to Disasters?
If you are considering providing chaplaincy care during disaster, emergencies and other on scene locations, you should only provide this with most current training. Working in an emergency environment is much more difficult on you and those professional rescuer and victims, say than during your ministry training. The whole pattern of care is different, not the least of which is that it is non-denominational.

Some tips:
  1. You must have an abiding respect for all faiths and belief systems without judgment.  People under stress are asking for your support of there belief systems, not to change the one they have. Many people who profess to not have a belief system they follow, may still still take great comfort in the supportive therapy, chaplaincy provides.
  2. Their are many fine organizations that offer workshops and even online training to help you prepare for this difficult yet rewarding care.
  3. Never just show up at a scene and expect admittance or access to workers and or victims.
  4. Make contact with your local Police, Fire, EMS or Sheriff's office to find out about volunteer openings and opportunities to work as or with other chaplains in your area.  Many agencies nation-wide welcome and are seeking Chaplains.  Working together with other Chaplains in your area helps with understanding the environment and also in debriefing Chaplains with the stresses involved in these efforts.
  5. Local agencies need to conduct background and security screening of applicants to allow access to workers and victims. (As I'm sure all clergy agree, someone unqualified and pretending to provide this kind of care could do monumental (even criminal) harm to those they contact and the name of Chaplaincy as a whole.)  But this can also be an opportunity to work on larger disasters or events outside your community.
